Colleagues,

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Research Newsletter.

S&T research continues to grow due to the work of our faculty and staff. In the first quarter of FY20 S&T research awards were $16.7M, up 50.1% from the previous year.

We continue to send our faculty to meet with funding agencies, through a travel grant which covers 2/3 of the expenses (see http://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/resources/policies/ and the link, “Travel Grant to Visit Funding Agencies”). Visiting program managers and program directors is the most important first step towards receiving funding. I am happy to see that more faculty are taking advantage of the program, and this can only lead to better research results.

Getting funding is not the end of a research effort, though; it is just the beginning. Engaging students in research, publishing, transferring the technology, these are all the outcomes of a successful and impactful research and scholarly program.

According to Academic Analytics during 2015-18 S&T faculty averaged more than 900 papers in journals and conferences each year, and from 2014 to 2018 S&T faculty publications were cited more than 31,000 times. These numbers show the quality and impact of our research and scholarship.

In addition, during 2018-19 we graduated 107 PhD students, 491 Master’s level students (464 MS, 12 ME, and 15 MBA), and 440 certificate students. In other words, our faculty changed the lives of 1,038 students just last year.

Finally, in FY19 our Technology Transfer Office reached new records: $698,000 in royalty income, up 44% over 5 years; 8 US and 25 non-US patents awarded; and a record number of 54 invention disclosures. Also, small businesses spun off by our researchers have averaged over $1.5M in Federal and other research funding in the past 3 years. S&T has an important and significant economic impact in the region.

Local announcements:

  • In the last newsletter I told you that we were training S&T students to apply for the NSF GRFP. I am glad to let you know that eight of our students applied. I wish all of them good luck, and hope to see them as GRFP recipients and S&T graduate students.
  • For information about research workshops and events organized by funding agencies please check this and previous newsletters.
  • If you are a faculty member who is eligible for the CAREER award or for the DoE, DoD, NIH, etc. young investigator awards, be on the lookout for an announcement regarding a “Early Career Research Awards Workshop.” Additional information for some of these awards can be found in the following websites (not an exhaustive list):
    • NSF: https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503214
    • NIH: https://commonfund.nih.gov/newinnovator
    • AFOSR: https://community.apan.org/wg/afosr/w/researchareas/12792/young-investigator-program-yip/
    • ONR: https://www.onr.navy.mil/Science-Technology/Directorates/office-research-discovery-invention/Sponsored-Research/YIP.aspx
    • DARPA: https://www.darpa.mil/work-with-us/for-universities/young-faculty-award
    • ARO: https://www.arl.army.mil/www/default.cfm?page=8
  • I encourage you to consider adding an REU supplement to your NSF grant. NSF estimates it awards around 1,600 new REU Supplements a year. If you are interested, first contact your NSF program director, and also check specific rules and deadlines of your directorate. For more information, please visit  https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517
  • I have heard from some of you that you would like to pay your GRAs more than Stipend X. Let me reiterate that this is indeed possible and allowed. In February 2019 I sent the following email to the faculty:

Colleagues,

I have been visiting departmental faculty meetings and in many of them our colleagues have told me that sometimes they cannot recruit their top graduate student prospects because they get outbid by other Universities.

I have discussed this with HR and the UM System, and I am happy to let you know that they all agree that Stipend X should be seen as the floor of what we pay our graduate students. All our supported graduate students, GTAs, GAs, and GRAs, can be paid more than Stipend X, as long as the funding exists and the funding agency allows the rate. This makes it possible for you to budget higher stipends in your grants, and, if necessary, match or exceed offers by competing Universities. The same is true for GTA/GAs: depending on the availability of funds, a department or a College can go above Stipend X and make competitive or matching offers to recruit the best.

Our goal is to get the best graduate students to come to S&T and work with on our research. I hope this new information will free you to do just that.

  • Finally, a request: Often our faculty host their Program Managers who visit S&T for program reviews. Please, let my office know about these visits. We can organize a seminar open to our faculty where the PMs can give information about their directorate and agency. Such information talks can be very useful for our researchers.

With best Miner wishes,

Costas Tsatsoulis

Vice Chancellor of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies
