Welcome to a new semester at Missouri S&T.
This, the first newsletter of the new academic year, highlights the success of our researchers in FY19, gives you information about some important research opportunities, and –for our new faculty- offers reminders of some of our on-going programs that support research at S&T.
The good news first: this past fiscal year our faculty received $48.8 million in research and external funding awards, a 34% increase over the previous year. Our expenditures held steady at $40.1 million. Congratulations to all our faculty and staff who made this success possible.
Local announcements:
- We have a new website! Through the outstanding effort of our experts in Marketing and Communications our website has been updated and improved. Please visit https://research.mst.edu and let us know what you think. Our website is an important face of our research capabilities.
- The re:Search Magazine for 2019 has been published. Please check it out: https://research.mst.edu/research-magazine/
- Through the leadership of Dr. Nancy Stone, and the assistance of Dr. Robin Walker, Curriculum Specialist/Consultant, from Columbia, MO, the Office of the VCR offered a seminar to approximately 20 of our undergraduate and first-year graduate students teaching them how to apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Previously we had also advised students about applying to DoD’s Science, Mathematics, And Research For Transformation (SMART) Scholarship. Our goal is to greatly increase the number of S&T graduate students on Federal scholarships and fellowships. These students will be looking for faculty mentors, so I hope you will assist them if they ask for your help.
- Don’t forget that we are restarting We Dig Research! Information about the event was sent to all faculty. The first meet up is on September 27 (3-5pm, in Ozark Room, Havener 207B (doors open at 2:30; talks are 3-4pm; social hour 4-5pm). I hope to see you all there. And put in your calendars the next two We Dig Research! meet ups: October 25th and November 22nd.
Other news:
- As we announced through an email to all our faculty, NSF Is making some changes to its biographical sketch format.
There are two important informational events happening in the next couple of months:
- First, NIH organizes its Fall 2019 NIH Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration in Phoenix, Arizona, November 7-8. This is a unique opportunity to learn about NIH and make contact with more than 65 NIH program experts. From the seminar website: “This seminar is your opportunity to make direct contact with NIH policy officials, grants management, program and review staff, and representatives from the HHS Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and others. In addition, take advantage of discussions involving more than 600 fellow attendees from around the world. In addition to learning more about the NIH grants processes and policies through the optional workshops and 2-day sessions, there are opportunities throughout the seminar to Meet the Experts 1:1. These 15 minutes chats are a great way to get more specific questions answered by NIH & HHS experts. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up in advance or on-site to speak with the expert(s) of your choice participating in the seminar.” For more information and to register visit: https://regionalseminars.od.nih.gov/phoenix2019/welcome/
- Second, NSF is organizing its Fall 2019 conference in Boston, November 18-19. Unfortunately the on-site conference is at capacity. But you can still attend virtually through webcast. For more information and to get notified of future NSF events please visit: https://nsfgrantsconferences.com/
Some reminders:
- The Office of the VCR will cover 2/3 of the expenses of our faculty when they visit funding agencies (see http://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/resources/policies/ and the link, “Travel Grant to Visit Funding Agencies”). Visiting program managers and program directors is the most important first step toward receiving funding. You can use the funding to visit, for example, the NIH Regional Seminar in Phoenix in November. Or any other agency and agency events.
- DARPA organizes a number of events for researchers. While Requests for Information (RIF) appear through FBO.GOV and PIVOT, open events can be found here: https://www.darpa.mil/events
- Our junior faculty can apply to DoD’s Young Investigator Programs (YIP), DoD’s answer to the CAREER award. The deadline has passed for this year, but you can start planning for next year. And to improve your chances you should go visit the appropriate program manager (remember my office will cover 2/3 of your expenses). More information about YIP can be found here:
- I hope that our faculty will also avail themselves of the Scholarly Outreach program that provides partial support for making presentations at Universities: http://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/media/research/sponsoredprograms/documents/forms/Scholarly%20Outreach%20Program.pdf
- I encourage you to consider adding an REU supplement to your NSF grant. NSF estimates it awards around 1,600 new REU Supplements a year. If you are interested, first contact your NSF program director, and also check specific rules and deadlines of your directorate. For more information, please visit https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517
Again, I welcome you all to the new semester, and wish all our faculty great success in their research and scholarly pursuits.
With best Miner wishes,
Costas Tsatsoulis
Vice Chancellor of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies
The Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research strives to increase campus awareness of limited submission opportunities, conduct fair and transparent internal selection competitions, and mitigate the risk of exceeding institutional submission limits or of non-authorized proposal submissions compromising institutional designees’ ability to submit proposals. We have launched an updated limited submissions website (https://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/funding/limited-submissions/).
New features include:
- a collection of advertised limited submissions opportunities,
- updated instructions for internal competitions, and
- a retrospective of the calendar year’s designees for internally competed opportunities. The opportunities list and retrospective will be updated weekly.
Notable new features of the internal competition process include:
- an expression of interest (EOI) stage for opportunities not historically competed at Missouri S&T (to determine the necessity of an internal competition prior to requesting Letters of Intent) and
- a “first-come-first-considered” status for
- opportunities whose internal EOI deadline has passed with no expressions of interest OR
- opportunities of which we become aware too late to run a full internal competition cycle.
Please note that two National Science Foundation (NSF) funding opportunities regularly competed at Missouri S&T are included in the limited submissions funding opportunities list: NSF’s National Research Traineeship Program (internal LOI due at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20) and Major Research Instrumentation (internal LOI due at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17).
Although the OVCR strives to identify major limited submission competitions, the online list may not be comprehensive. Identifying limited submission opportunities, particularly those that are new or are issued by foundations and societies, is a community-wide effort. If you identify a limited submission opportunity that is not included among the posted advertisements, or discover solicitation updates that differ from the content posted, please notify us at limitedsubmissions@mst.edu.
Thank you for helping ensure that Missouri S&T’s applications to these prestigious opportunities represent the best our campus has to offer.
Please direct questions about Limited Submission internal competitions to
573-341-4134 or limitedsubmissions@mst.edu.
