A note from the dean

Dear Colleague:

Greetings from Missouri University of Science and Technology. The arrival of another school year brings near-record enrollment on campus, including a significant increase in doctoral students, and a bevy of activity in our classrooms, labs and research centers. Please take a moment to review just some of the recent highlights here in our College of Engineering and Computing.

Long road: From waitress to named professor, Bartlett travels winding path to S&T

Laura Bartlett’s path to joining the Missouri S&T faculty included jobs at a dog food plant, cleaning motel rooms, and working as a waitress and on a factory line. After returning to Rolla as a young mother, she parlayed a federal Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need fellowship into a doctorate in materials science and engineering.

Computer science chair Sajal Das and a postdoc have created a “Fitbit on steroids” that could benefit dementia patients as well as soldiers in Army combat training.

A team of Missouri S&T researchers is collaborating with Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies on a five-year, $6.5 million project on metal additive manufacturing.

An increased number of Missouri S&T Ph.D. students are now eligible to receive full tuition stipends thanks to a new $3 million annual investment by the university.

College Factual/USA Today ranks S&T as No. 3 engineering school

For the third consecutive year, Missouri S&T ranks as the No. 3 engineering school by College Factual/USA Today. The outcome-based ranking also lists mechanical and civil engineering among the Top 10 best values by discipline.
