S&T students and alumni never cease to impress me,” said Bradley, the retired president of Houston-based Kinder Morgan CO2 Co., who also endorsed the benefits of failure. “My experience has taught me that failure can open doors and many times can be a blessing,” he said. “The important thing is how you respond when you experience your moment of truth.” Read more about his commencement address. ![]() Dean Jones ![]() Phil Ling OGS members honored with Award of Professional Distinction Two OGS members received the Award of Professional Distinction during December commencement: Dean Jones, NucE’75, MS NucE’76, and Phil Ling, ChE’92. Jones is president and CEO of TransWare Enterprises Inc., a company he founded in 1988 to develop advanced technologies for the nuclear energy industry. Ling is general manager of acquisitions and divestments for Shell Pipeline Co.’s Midstream Master Limited Partnership. He joined Shell in 2001 and has held many roles worldwide in process engineering, crude oil supply, business development, and mergers and acquisitions. Read more about our honorees.
![]() Associated Electric Cooperative supports cooperative engineering program A $20,000 gift from Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. (AECI), with additional funding totaling $50,000 over three years, will support the cooperative engineering program in mechanical engineering launched in 2019 by Missouri S&T and Missouri State University. “AECI’s generous gift will help open the door to engineering for more students in southwest Missouri while supporting workforce development for future professionals across the state,” says Richard Wlezien, S&T’s vice provost and dean of engineering and computing. Springfield-based AECI provides electricity to approximately 910,000 homes, farms and businesses through 51 local electric cooperatives in Missouri, southeast Iowa and northeast Oklahoma. Register here. ![]() Student design center expansion nears completion Construction of an 8,000-square-foot expansion of the Kummer Student Design Center, home of Missouri S&T’s student design teams, is moving forward rapidly, with anticipated completion in April. Equipment will be relocated to the expanded machine shop, fabrication bays and other new spaces over the summer in anticipation of the next design team cycle. In addition to their competition projects, design teams are in the process of implementing lean manufacturing and 5S system standards for the workplace. Clayco Lab scheduled for completion this summer The Clayco Advanced Construction and Materials Lab, a 14,800-square-foot expansion of the High Bay Structures Lab in Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall, will be completed this summer and dedicated on Friday, Oct. 16. Thank you to Nucor-Yamato Steel Co. for a new donation of more than 85 tons of structural steel, produced and supplied by three company facilities; the beams and channel from Nucor-Yamato Steel in Blytheville, Ark.; the tube from Nucor Tubular Products in Marseilles, Ill.; and the joist and decking from Nucor Vulcraft in Fort Payne, Ala. Missouri S&T is ranked among the nation’s top 50 universities in three categories — and as the state’s top public school in these categories. The average return on investment for an S&T graduate 20 years after graduation is $749,000, and the ROI after 30 years exceeds $1 million. Read more about the study. ![]() Power plant chimney removal completed The removal of two power plant chimneys that have dominated the campus skyline since 1945 began in December and concluded in January. The power plant was decommissioned in 2014 when a new geothermal energy system launched campuswide. Over the past five years, the system has reduced energy use by almost 60% and reduced the university’s carbon footprint by 25,000 tons or more annually. ![]() Missouri S&T Day at the State Capitol to launch 150th anniversary celebration Missouri S&T's 150th anniversary celebration will kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with Missouri S&T Day at the State Capitol in Jefferson City. The event will mark the 150th anniversary of the legislation that created the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870. The school was chartered on Feb. 24, 1870, and the first classes convened on Nov. 6, 1971.
