OGS members receive Miner Alumni Association awards Congratulations to the OGS members honored by the Miner Alumni Association during Homecoming in October: Gerry Stevenson, ChE’59, MS ChE’63, and Paul Lang, MinE’83, recipients of the Alumni Merit Award; Dixie Finley, Psyc’68, who received the Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award; and Bill Hallett, MetE’55, who was honored with the Frank H. Mackaman Alumni Volunteer Service Award. Ten honorees received awards during the annual Miner Legends Lunch on Oct. 4. S&T welcomes new vice provost of enrollment management Shobi Sivadasan joined Missouri S&T as vice provost of enrollment management on Oct. 1. She previously served as senior associate vice president for graduate and international admissions at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, and as dean of graduate admissions and enrollment management for Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. “Shobi’s expertise in enrollment marketing, as well as her international and domestic recruitment experience, make her the ideal leader for our enrollment management division,” says Stephen Roberts, S&T interim provost. ![]() Shobi Sivadasan, vice provost of enrollment management
![]() The Miner Match raises $6.1 million for scholarships to date Thank you to the OGS members and other alumni who have stepped up to support the Miner Match scholarship initiative. To date, donors have contributed $6.1 million to this initiative designed to help S&T recruit top students through Next Generation Merit Scholarships and help current students with financial need complete their degrees through Finish Line Scholarships. Contributions received during our first Miner Giving Day on April 24 totaled $375,000 in 24 hours, and thanks to the Miner Match, $750,000 in total proceeds supported Finish Line Scholarships. We are grateful to the many donors who demonstrated that Miners care. ![]() Fall career fair largest in S&T history In September, a record 331 employers and more than 3,450 students came together for the largest career fair in university history. The event attracted employers from 33 states, including 24 Fortune 500 companies and 49 employers participating for the first time. A new event, Miner Mingle, gave employers and students an opportunity to meet informally the night before the career fair, and on-campus interviews throughout the rest of the week proved that Miners are in high demand. ![]() Mark Mullin to retire as director of athletics Mark Mullin, who has served for nearly three decades as director of athletics at Missouri S&T, has announced that he will retire following the 2019-20 athletic season. Mullin, who became the university’s athletic director in 1992, has been at S&T since 1985 when he became head coach for the swimming and diving program. He spent six years in a dual role before becoming the full-time athletic director in 1998. He will retire on Sept. 1, 2020. During Mullin’s tenure, Miner intercollegiate teams captured 14 conference championships and 10 regular season or division titles, in addition to reaching NCAA Division II championship competitions 71 times. ![]() Division 1 takedown! The Miner football team scored its first win against an NCAA Division 1 team in 13 years when they beat the Tigers from Texas Southern University on Oct. 12. The Miners’ last Division 1 victory was in 2006 when they took down the Butler University Bulldogs. ![]() Hasselmann Alumni House parking and outdoor gathering space will expand to the north with the purchase of the property above. Miner Alumni Association completes long-term plans for Hasselmann Alumni House Recent Miner Alumni Association investments in Hasselmann Alumni House have allowed us to complete long-term plans for the house. The association has purchased the property immediately to the north of the house, which will provide space for additional parking and a larger outdoor area for special events. The association has also upgraded the catering kitchen with a six-burner range, double convection oven and other improvements to enhance catering capabilities. ![]() S&T wins funding for four new research programs A Center for Glass Science and Engineering is one of four Missouri S&T projects to receive funding through a University of Missouri System initiative to strengthen research. S&T will establish four new research centers and labs to advance the university’s expertise in materials science and engineering, civil infrastructure, and electrical power systems. These projects are among 19 on the four UM System campuses selected to receive funding. ![]() Joe Miner is spreading holiday cheer The Miner Alumni Association’s annual ornament mailing raises funds for scholarships and other programs. Since the series launched, the association has raised more than $660,000 — and featured Missouri S&T landmarks and icons including Hasselmann Alumni House, the chancellor’s residence, the Rolla Building, Havener Center and St. Pat.
