Announcing: First Year Fiesta!

Missouri S&T is experiencing an 8% reduction in first-year students who do not return for their second year on campus. While it is true that some students will change universities to pursue a degree not offered here, for example, a nursing degree, some students become discouraged after a challenging year, and can only see roadblocks ahead of them.
All students face a variety of obstacles that must be overcome along their degree path. These barriers can range from academic and financial concerns to emotional and physical issues, to sometimes just a feeling of not fitting in or belonging. Sometimes it may take a while to find their people on campus. But for the student who is discouraged and needs encouragement, the Chancellor and Provost are launching an initiative to address the 8% melt, which will include this celebratory event to mark the end of the first year.
As part of this initiative, the First Year Fiesta will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. alongside the Student Union Board’s Block Party at the Jack Carney Puck. Students completing their first year on campus (including transfer students) will be invited to take pictures with friends in the photo booth, paint their own maracas, register for fantastic prizes, and enjoy walking tacos. Campus resource staff will be on hand to address any barriers that students might be facing.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday in April leading up to the event, students are encouraged to drop by the Got Barriers? booth to discuss barriers they might be facing in academic success or re-enrollment, as well as to gain extra entries for prize drawings at the First Year Fiesta.
Encourage students who are completing their first year on campus to attend to celebrate one year down!

Definition - Under the ADA, a service dog is any dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.
|
- The task(s) performed must be directly related to the person’s disability.
- The service dog must be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist a person with a disability. For example, a service dog may recognize seizure activity and alert and protect the handler.
- The task(s) must be active not passive. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
|
Are service dogs allowed on campus and in classrooms?
Service dogs are permitted within university-controlled facilities, including classrooms.
Students who wish to bring a service dog to Missouri S&T are covered by the ADA and may bring the animal to campus without prior approval. Missouri S&T requests but cannot require students to voluntarily register service dogs with Student Accessibility and Testing.
University employees are generally allowed to use service animals in the workplace unless doing so would pose a substantial risk to health or safety. Employees planning to bring a service dog to work should contact the ADA Coordinator.

Prioritize a healthy work / life balance.
Rolla is "in the middle of everywhere", and there are many state parks, recreation, conservation and wilderness areas close by. Agnes and Thomas Vojta, physics professors at Missouri S&T, have created a resource chock full of a variety of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty, along with vistas you might see along the way. There are many trails located within an easy drive from Rolla, plus trails in Arkansas and elsewhere.
The Vojtas say, "Since our student days, we have made it a priority to take time for hiking and other outdoor activities, even when our schedules are busy. It helps us stay well and balanced and is important for our mental and physical health."
