Mars Rover Design Team

Roving to a world championship

What does it take to design and build the best Mars rover in the world? Just ask the Miners who did. In June, S&T’s Mars Rover Design Team returned from the Utah desert as world champions, out-roving 34 competitors from seven countries to win the Mars Society’s 2017 University Rover Challenge. The team’s rover, Gryphon, scored a perfect 100 in two of the four competition categories – extreme retrieval and autonomous transversal. Miners also did one proud for the United States as the first American team to win the University Rover Challenge since 2010.

And racing to strong finishes

On the heels of the Mars rover triumph, four other S&T design teams placed among the finalists in June and July competitions. The Rocket Design Team finished in second place out of 96 teams in the inaugural Spaceport America Cup in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Formula SAE Design Team finished second out of 78 teams at Formula-SAE Lincoln, the Formula SAE Electric Design Team placed fourth overall (plus finishing first in efficiency and second in cost), and the Solar Car Design Team placed eighth out of 18 teams in the Formula Sun Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. S&T and UM System partner on infrastructure research initiative

From substandard roads to unsafe bridges, our nation faces unprecedented infrastructure challenges. Now S&T and the University of Missouri System are partnering on the final phase of a $10.5 million infrastructure research initiative focused on this national priority. The first phase was completed with a U.S. Department of Transportation grant that funded $3 million in testing equipment. The second phase brought an infusion of expertise and research to S&T with six new faculty. The final phase is the Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory (ACML), which will add 16,000 square feet of research space to the existing construction materials labs and High Bay Structure Lab in Butler-Carlton Hall. S&T has received over $3.4 million in support of the $6.5 million project from alumni and industry partners, and the UM System has contributed $1.6 million, bringing the total secured to more than $5 million. S&T is raising the balance to complete the ACML. Gifts will be matched through a bequest from James A. Heidman, CE’65. Maker Faire in Kansas City

Front and center at Maker Faire

S&T’s world champion Mars rover, Gryphon, roved to Kansas City’s Union Station in June as a star attraction of Maker Faire Kansas City, an innovation festival attended by more than 17,000 inventors, builders, dreamers, doers – and future Miners! As a lead sponsor for Maker Faire, S&T played a major role in the expo’s success. During the two-day event, more than 600 children visited the S&T booth to participate in an “OzoMiner” coding game that simulated a Mars mission. Read more and watch video highlights.
