Colleagues,

Welcome to the last edition of the 2019-20 Research Newsletter.

In these last few weeks we experienced the bittersweet moment of celebrating the graduation of our students, and the end of a unique semester in the careers of all of us who serve at S&T.

EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS

While the world around us was changing, the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research continued to serve our faculty and our research, albeit in changed ways as well. We organized and ran a number of events, all through Zoom. Attendance of these was the best we ever had, which leads me to conclude that in the future we will offer our workshops and other events face-to-face, while also streaming.

Some of the events below were also mentioned in our last newsletter.  Since most of these events were recorded and can be viewed on our web site we have added this information below.

In summary:

  • We held three “Research Continuity” meetings. The goal was to have a conversation with our faculty about how our office will operate during the pandemic, the status of our research laboratories, graduate students, recruiting, etc. The meetings were held on April 3, April 17, and May 1. The next one is organized for June 4. The two April meetings can be viewed at our web page at: https://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/covid-19/ under the respective dates.
  • We continued to host “We Dig Research!” and the last event of the semester on March 24 was the most successful one with 12 presenters and more than 60 virtual participants. I am always amazed by the diversity and excellence of the research at S&T. I encourage all of you to participate in future events as a presenter and attendee. Our next event is anticipated to be held in September 2020.
  • We also organized two workshops to inform our faculty about research opportunities. We opened the workshops to our graduate students, too, and had robust participation from them.
    • The first workshop, held on April 5, consisted of two parts: during the first one, led by Maria Shaub, we discussed Federal funding opportunities for faculty at the beginning of their career. During the second part, led by Summer Young, we discussed how to approach proposal writing as a project management task. The workshop can be seen at https://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/research-information/
    • The second workshop, held on May 22, was organized and led by Dr. Nancy Stone. A panel of four S&T faculty (Drs. Beetner, Bristow, Moats, and O’Malley), John Woodson, our Interim Director of Technology Transfer and Economic Development, and two industry representatives, Dr. Yalamachili, Director of Corporate Quality for Gerdau Long Steel North America, and Mr. Pennell, Chief Metallurgist at Nucor-Yamato Steel Company, a division of Nucor Corporation, discussed how universities can work with industry. I found the information shared by the panelists to be extremely useful. Working with industry on R&D has its own challenges and benefits, and, if you were not able to attend, I encourage you to see the recorded event here: https://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/research-information/

The biggest event of the past two months was the “Virtual Zoom Research Retreat.” As you all remember we had announced a Research Retreat for March 19. While our strategic plan has as one of its goals the doubling of S&T research expenditures by 2024-25 it does not provide a vision or path to achieve this goal. To start answering the question of how to reach our research goals we began organizing the March Research Retreat. The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to postpone the retreat, and we organized it again as a Zoom retreat on May 17. The “Virtual Zoom Research Retreat (VIZORR)” invited 32 faculty who were split into 5 separate groups and then asked the question of how to create a “S&T Research Ecosystem” by performing a SWOT analysis: what are our unique strengths in research and scholarship, where do we need to get better or move to new areas and agencies, what are the obstacles to increasing our research, innovation and technology transfer success, and what may threaten our progress.

Very important insights came out of VIZZOR, and we have collected them and are analyzing them. These insights will lead to a second retreat to discuss the pillars of the S&T research directions.

You can see the introduction to VIZZOR by Chancellor Dehghani and the reports and conclusions by the five groups here: https://sponsoredprograms.mst.edu/research-information/.

OTHER NEWS

  • It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mr. John Woodson agreed to serve as the Interim Director of Technology Transfer and Economic Development.
  • I also want to take this space to once again publicly thank the members of the expanded ad hoc committee that have worked so hard and diligently to help open our research laboratories to our faculty, staff and students, while keeping them and our community safe: Drs. Corns, Khayat, Lueking, Mormile, and O’Malley, Dr. Goodman, and Ms. Bresnahan have put in innumerable hours to this service task; they deserve the thanks of the whole S&T community. Special thanks go also the three staff persons who do all the paperwork, communicate with the PIs and the committee, and play an integral role in the continuation of our research activities: Allison Osbirn, Abbie Sherman, and Gayle Spitzmiller.

WEB SITE

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic we have added a lot of content to our web site. At osp.mst.edu you will find a new section labeled “Information Regarding COVID-19.” We are linking to S&T, State, and National sources regarding the pandemic. We also provide links to all communications from my office regarding the pandemic, the evolving rules for laboratory reopening, laboratory safety guidance, etc. We will continue to add content to our web site as it becomes available.

With best Miner wishes,

Costas Tsatsoulis

Vice Chancellor of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies
