Welcome to the chemistry department’s annual newsletter. Dr. Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis here, but you can call me Lia.
This past year, the chemistry department has had a lot of great news to share with you. Whether it is a new undergraduate certificate in medicinal chemistry, a grad-track pathway in chemistry, students standing out in the laboratories, faculty publishing articles and earning distinctions, or Dr. Philip Whitefield partnering with Dr. Klaus Woelk to earn another multimillion-dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there is just too much to share.

This past summer, the department held its inaugural summer camp titled “Discovering Chemistry” for rising 9th-11th grade students in June. Sixteen students from Missouri and nearby states engaged in 10 laboratories experiments. Participants also used some of the department’s advanced analytical instrumentation to analyze caffeine in soft drinks and to test trace metals in drinking water. Read more.

We are passionate about helping our students and faculty reach their full potential and make outstanding contributions to our world — just like many of you have done. Your annual support of Missouri S&T’s chemistry department makes an important difference in our work. When a student calls you and is eager to share what is happening on campus and in our department, we hope you will take the time to connect and catch up. We also hope you will help us continue to make a difference in our students’ lives by giving back.
