Newsletter

Dear friends,

As we approach the end of the year, I am pleased to share several exciting developments from the Earth Sciences and Engineering Department. This has been a year of momentum, growth and renewed energy across all three programs: geology and geophysics, geological engineering, and petroleum engineering. We’ve had exciting successes, such as the PetroBowl team being the best in the nation, and we’re seeing increased recognition for the department.

Growing enrollment
Our intensified recruiting efforts and expanded scholarship opportunities have produced outstanding results. This fall, our freshman class is twice the size of last year’s, reflecting growing interest in our disciplines and the exceptional teamwork of our faculty, staff, student ambassadors and alumni. We are especially grateful to our alumni whose generosity has allowed us to expand scholarship support and attract new students.

New geospatial engineering program
We are proud to launch the nation’s first master of science in geospatial engineering program, positioning Missouri S&T at the forefront of this rapidly growing field. The program will prepare graduates for careers in geospatial data analytics, remote sensing, national security, and environmental and engineering applications.

Improved spaces
With support from our alumni and the College of Engineering and Computing, we have significantly upgraded to the Mineral Museum, department conference room, physical geology teaching lab, and petroleum engineering technology lab. We also continue to expand the Earth Sciences and Engineering Discovery Zone, an interactive space featuring models, mineral and rock samples, instruments, and engineering demonstrations for prospective students.

Faculty news

  • Our faculty earned numerous impressive distinctions this year. Dr. Baojun Bai was listed as a top 2% cited scientist in his field and received the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ 2025 Production and Operations Award.
  • Dr. Katherine Grote earned a Faculty Teaching Award, and Dr. Jonathan Obrist-Farner received a Faculty Excellence Award and was named a Fulbright Scholar.
  • Dr. Jeremy Maurer earned tenure and a promotion to associate professor and received the Mines and Metallurgy Academy junior faculty award.
  • Dr. Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe had an ancient microscopic fossil species from the Arctic Ocean named in her honor.
  • We welcomed new teaching faculty including Peter Bachle for geology and geophysics and Dr. Ozgur Satici for geological engineering, and searches are underway for faculty in geospatial engineering and petroleum/geological engineering.
  • David Carpenter took part in a Q&A feature for Engineers Week.
  • Dr. John Hogan retired after 27 years of service, and we mourn the passing of Dr. J. David Rogers and have established a scholarship in his memory.

Looking ahead
With rising enrollment, new programs and modernized facilities, our department is well positioned for continued growth. As funding sources decline, alumni support is more vital than ever. To support our momentum, please consider donating.
