As we approach the end of the year, I am pleased to share several exciting developments from the Earth Sciences and Engineering Department. This has been a year of momentum, growth and renewed energy across all three programs: geology and geophysics, geological engineering, and petroleum engineering. We’ve had exciting successes, such as the PetroBowl team being the best in the nation, and we’re seeing increased recognition for the department.
Growing enrollment
Our intensified recruiting efforts and expanded scholarship opportunities have produced outstanding results. This fall, our freshman class is twice the size of last year’s, reflecting growing interest in our disciplines and the exceptional teamwork of our faculty, staff, student ambassadors and alumni. We are especially grateful to our alumni whose generosity has allowed us to expand scholarship support and attract new students.
New geospatial engineering program
We are proud to launch the nation’s first master of science in geospatial engineering program, positioning Missouri S&T at the forefront of this rapidly growing field. The program will prepare graduates for careers in geospatial data analytics, remote sensing, national security, and environmental and engineering applications.
Improved spaces
With support from our alumni and the College of Engineering and Computing, we have significantly upgraded to the Mineral Museum, department conference room, physical geology teaching lab, and petroleum engineering technology lab. We also continue to expand the Earth Sciences and Engineering Discovery Zone, an interactive space featuring models, mineral and rock samples, instruments, and engineering demonstrations for prospective students.
