Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:

Welcome to the Fall Semester 2024! As a new dean at S&T, I had the pleasure of greeting our incoming undergraduate students during Opening Week and Convocation, as well as addressing kickoff events for both the Kummer Vanguard Scholars and Kummer I&E Fellows.

It's always exciting to leave the dog days of summer behind and get started back to school, including the myriad sports, games, clubs and design teams. I'm personally also glad to have CrepEscape croissants at Miner Brew on Thursdays and Fridays!

We also introduce our new Kummer College faculty:

Anita Ahl, assistant teaching professor of business information and technology. A certified public accountant, Ahl has taught accounting at Bradley University, Drake University, Des Moines Area Community College and Western Illinois University. She earned a master’s degree in accountancy from Bradley University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western Illinois University. Ahl is a certified black belt in Six Sigma.

Kris Bruckerhoff, assistant teaching professor of business information and technology. He joins S&T from Valley City State University in North Dakota where he was the director of online teaching and learning. His research interests include behavioral economics, distance learning, leadership and metacognition. Bruckerhoff holds a master’s degree in financial planning from Kansas State University, an MBA and a master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Cloud State University, and bachelor’s degrees in sociology and economics from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Dr. Tsangyao Chen, assistant teaching professor of business information and technology, who joined S&T in January. He previously worked as a research technology specialist at Florida State University. Chen earned a Ph.D. in information science from FSU, a Ph.D. in instructional technology and a master’s degree in elementary education from Ohio University, and a teacher’s certificate in elementary education from National Taipei University of Education.

Dr. Minsek Ko, assistant professor of business and information technology. He comes to S&T from Iowa State University, where he earned a Ph.D. in business and technology. His background includes experience in programming, database engineering and analyzing complex data. His research interests include online reputation, online content, sharing economy, metaverse and information security. Ko earned a master’s degree in information systems from the University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Amaury Lendasse, chair and professor of engineering management and systems engineering. He comes to S&T from the University of Houston, where he was a professor and department chair of information science and technology. Lendasse’s research focuses on data science, big data analytics, machine learning, information visualization, data mining, time series prediction, explainable AI and incomplete data. Lendasse earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, two master’s degrees – in control theory and in mechanical engineering – and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

Wangchuchu Zhao, assistant teaching professor of business and information technology, who joined S&T in January. She previously taught at S&T as an adjunct lecturer, and she was a graduate research assistant. Zhao earned a master’s degree in information science and technology and a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering, both from Missouri S&T.

New leader hits the ground running

Shortly after officially joining S&T on Aug. 1, Dr. Amaury Lendasse, chair and Sarchet Endowed Professor of engineering management, led a retreat for engineering management and systems engineering (EMSE) faculty.

Lendasse says he was drawn to the opportunity to join Missouri S&T because of our emphasis on teaching and collaborative research, particularly in the area of AI.

Ryan Highfill on campus

Highfill recognized as exceptional student leader

Ryan Highfill, a senior in engineering management and civil engineering from Ozark, Missouri, has been named a 2024 recipient of the Remington R. Williams Award. Highfill is the executive director of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri and a former chapter president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

Upcoming summit focuses on rural infrastructure challenges

Missouri S&T will host its second Rural Infrastructure Challenge Summit from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 in the university’s Innovation Forum.

The event, which is funded by the Public Interest Technology University Network (PITUN), is free, and industry professionals, students, faculty members and rural residents are invited to attend.

“For this summit, our focus will be on the design of energy resilience training and technical assistance in rural communities,” says Dr. Casey Canfield, an associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering.

Noteworthy

Dr. Cecil Chua, associate professor of business and information technology, was recently recognized for his outstanding work through receiving the Post Tenure Review Excellence Award. This award is granted to faculty who excel in scholarship and teaching through the five-year review period after achieving tenure.

Dr. Mahelet Fikru, associate professor of economics, co-authored a book titled Handbook of Merger Control and Environmental Policy: Theory and Applications as part of Springer’s “Natural Resource Management and Policy” series. The book develops an economic framework to examine the relationship between merger and acquisition incentives, merger control, environmental policies and firms’ sustainability practices. The chapters highlight the importance of policy coordination among different agencies to promote market efficiency and environmental protection.
