English and Technical Communication

Newsletter

Dear friends and alumni,

My name is Kathryn Dolan and I served as the acting chair for the fall 2023 semester while Dr. Kristine Swenson has been on sabbatical to conduct research and have time to write.

I only held the title for few months, but I have seen so many wonderful accomplishments earned by our students, staff and faculty this past year that we cannot include them all in one newsletter!

For example, Dr. Jossalyn Gale held a very successful Innovative Communication Conference in April, coordinating panel presentations, poster sessions and multimedia demonstrations for the general public. And Dr. Ryan Cheek recently earned funding through the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) to launch a “Zine Lab” for advancing gender justice and promoting technological equity.

You’ll see more news below, including a bittersweet farewell to a beloved member of the department, a faculty profile, and a view of teaching and research to come. We’re excited to share all of this news with you and hope that you’ll return the favor by sharing your news with us—via email, LinkedIn or visits to the department.

Happy belated New Year!

Warm regards,

Kathryn Dolan, Ph.D.
Acting chair, English and technical communication

Dr. Elizabeth Cummins, professor emerita of English and technical communication, died on Saturday, Nov. 9.

“Elizabeth was an amazing teacher, advocate, writer and friend,” says Dr. Kristine Swenson, chair and professor of English and technical communication. “She never stopped working to improve the campus experience for our students – especially women at S&T.”

Dr. Sarah Hercula: Learning with linguistics

Dr. Sarah Hercula teaching in class.

Dr. Sarah Hercula, associate professor of English and technical communication, blends several fields in her work. One of her current projects, which focuses on users’ perceptions of virtual assistants’ accented voice settings, combines elements of English and psychology. But she says that is the whole point of the field, as linguistics is a social science with humanistic elements. Read more about her research.
