Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:

Today I'd  like to share with you some examples of impact and initiative.

Cylan Burns is a typical Miner student majoring in engineering management. But his story is worthy of recognition at a national level because he embodies the kind of success we expect of our students and graduates.

James Sterling portrait

He was interviewed for a Wall Street Journal article ranking S&T as being No. 9 on a list of “The Top U.S. Colleges That Make New Graduates Rich.” Cylan is quoted in that article as he describes his internships and international travel, and he provides more insight into his journey in our S&T news story.

One skill set that our students develop is proficiency at working with others on team-based projects. In September, students were challenged by two Kummer Student Programs, including the 24-hour Campus Impact Challenge and Micro Grand Challenge, which was supported by Dr. Donald Wunsch II, who guides teams in seeking to reverse-engineer the brain using artificial intelligence.

We are grateful to Dr. Rachel Kohman for leading these and many other student activities and programs under the auspices of Kummer Student Programs (KSP). Her leadership of KSP and her work to engage all interested S&T students in entrepreneurial activities, some in collaboration with the Technology Transfer and Economic Development (TTED) office, have been recognized by her new appointment as assistant dean of entrepreneurship education in Kummer College. Congrats to Dr. Kohman!

Finally, please consider joining us for our first distinguished speaker to join us as part of our Innovation Ecosystem Design Initiative, Dr. Joel West. He will be speaking on Kummer Day, October 9, at 4 p.m. in Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center on the topic of “Creating an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: Lessons from San Diego.” Please join us!

Sincerely,

Kohman named to leadership role

Dr. Rachel Kohman has been named assistant dean of entrepreneurship education in the Kummer College of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

“I am excited to continue strengthening and supporting the opportunities for students and the S&T community to engage in entrepreneurial-minded pursuits,” says Kohman. “I am grateful to work with so many incredible collaborators from faculty and staff to industry partners and alumni who are aligned in our passion to empower individuals and drive innovation.”

Cylan Burns on campus

On record with The Wall Street Journal

When The Wall Street Journal announced its latest college rankings earlier this month, engineering management student Cylan Burns was quoted for his perspective as an S&T student. The following is an excerpt from the newspaper’s Sept. 9 article, titled “The Top U.S. Colleges That Make New Graduates Rich.”

For Cylan Burns, who’s on track to graduate from No. 9 Missouri University of Science and Technology in December with a degree in engineering management, enrolling in the college was an easy choice, in part because he could see the positive outcomes of graduates.

“I wanted in-state tuition, and I’m from Missouri, so the choice is kind of obvious because S&T’s the best for engineering in Missouri and, I’ve heard, the nation,” Burns says.

Burns has held three internships and traveled to South America twice to complete rainwater and pipeline systems evaluations with the university’s Engineers Without Borders chapter.

“I’m not really worried about getting a job just because I have that experience,” says Burns. “I feel like they’ve set me up really well for success.”

Burns came to S&T from Versailles High School, where he was the school’s valedictorian.

The Coterie of Missouri S&T made history by awarding its largest scholarship donation for the 2024-25 academic year. Three Kummer College students were each presented with $6,000, totaling $18,000 in scholarships. This marks the first time Coterie has granted scholarships to three students in one year, a milestone for the organization. From left: Gina Valente-Khayat, Coterie scholarship chair; Molly Fitzgerald, a senior in business and management systems and education; Abigail Richner, a senior in engineering management; and Sarah Potter, Coterie president. Scholarship recipient Abigail Lebar, a junior in engineering management, is not pictured.

Adewole Adegbola, a doctoral candidate in engineering management, won third prize in the Society for Engineering and Management Systems Best Student Paper Competition. The award was presented at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Annual Conference and Expo 2024 held May 18-21, in Montreal. Adegbola’s paper, titled “A Model for Integrating Distributed Product Development Requirements with Product Portfolio Planning,” is co-authored by Dr. Venkat Allada, professor of engineering management and systems engineering.

Three faculty members received promotions and/or tenure, effective Sept. 1. Congratulations to:

  • Dr. Casey Canfield, who was promoted to associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, and granted tenure.
  • Mahelet Fikru, who was promoted to professor of economics.
  • Dr. Yishu Zhou, who was promoted to associate professor of economics and granted tenure.

Dr. Steven Corns
, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, will receive $500,000 in funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for his project titled “University of Missouri Flood Risk Resiliency and Inland Waterway Navigation Research.” The grant will start Oct. 1, and conclude in September 2027.

A study by S&T researchers explores the economic impact of carbon capture and storage and renewable energy policies. Dr. Mahelet Fikru, professor of economics, and Dr. Hongyan Ma, associate professor and Kummer Impact Professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, published their findings in Energy Economics.

Victoria Kraemer, PhD student in engineering management, has been selected as a Future Faculty Fellow for the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. The goal of this program is to prepare students for the academic job market and faculty hiring process.
