Dear alumni and friends,

Greetings from Rolla! As I write, the semester has entered the last week of classes, and students are busily preparing for final exams and completing final papers and projects. The fall 2022 semester was the first since the start of the pandemic to feel close to normal again.

Important changes came to the department in 2022. Most notably, Dr. Diana Ahmad and Dr. Patrick Huber both retired. We also had one prominent new addition to the department this year, for Dr. Mehrzad Boroujerdi, the new dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education, is a political scientist.

Department faculty members also continued to garner awards this past year. Dr. Sheppard won a Faculty Excellence Award, Dr. Schramm won an Outstanding Teaching Award, and Dr. DeWitt won both major teaching awards.

As always, it is a privilege to serve as interim chair of such an outstanding department. I particularly enjoy meeting new students and hearing from alumni, even if only through comments on our Facebook page. And if you’re ever back in Rolla, be sure to stop in and say hello!

Sincerely,

Michael W. Bruening, Ph.D.
Interim Chair, History and Political Science

Great teacher makes ‘Great Course’

History buffs can now learn more details about the Vietnam War through a new online video-based class created by Dr. John C. McManus. McManus, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history, produced a college-level Vietnam War video course for the “The Great Courses” website.

In the news

The department was frequently featured in the media this past year. Dr. Shannon Fogg was featured on a BBC podcast, Dr. Jeff Schramm was interviewed on ABC’s KMIZ 17 about an Amtrak crash, Dr. Larry Gragg was featured on the History Channel and Dr. Alanna Krolikowski was quoted in Popular Science.

New reads

Dr. Kathleen Sheppard published a new book on a different type of social network – a physical network of archaeologists, Egyptologists, and other travelers who were drawn to Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Petra DeWitt’s new book examines the volunteer Missouri Home Guard’s full role in WWI, including its ability to preserve patriotism and reduce opposition to the war.

Students making history

Our students shined brightly this year. Clint Schwarz presented his senior project on Marine Corps recruit training at the Undergraduate Research Day at the Missouri state capitol. Donovan Mefford won second prize at the S&T undergraduate research competition for his paper on the 1525 German Peasants’ War. Nelson Colón completed a senior project on the German police during World War II, complete with a museum exhibit of original uniforms and artifacts. And Garrett Blum and Jeremy Robey were part of the S&T team that won the Academic Competition Federation fall tournament.

Phonathon calling starts soon

In history and political science, students learn to ask the questions that matter most. For many, the first step on their learning journey is scholarship support.

Our annual phonathon is underway. We hope you’ll take the time to speak with the student caller and consider a scholarship gift. Your support will honor the great teaching Missouri S&T provides, helping our future leaders make history.
