Dear alumni, friends and colleagues,

The fall 2023 semester is well underway, and I am excited to share some of MSE’s great work. Our students regularly assist faculty with research that will truly have a global impact and shape the future. Students have research opportunities at S&T that are unlike any they would experience at another university, and our industry partners recognize and value this. I am proud to note that our department remains one of the best in the world in terms of steel processing, hypersonics and solving the critical minerals crisis.

Drs. Ron O’Malley, Jeffrey Smith and Laura Bartlett are redefining steel processing with more environmentally friendly approaches. Drs. Greg Hilmas, Bill Fahrenholtz and David Lipke are pioneers in designing materials that can withstand the extreme conditions of hypersonic flight. Multiple faculty members across our department — and several other departments at S&T — are working to help the country have a more resilient supply of critical minerals. I am also excited to announce that four new MSE experts with diverse backgrounds recently joined our team. Jackson Hawkins is leading the Missouri S&T Glass Shop, and Drs. Charmayne Lonergan, Jason Lonergan and Sharon Uwanyuze are now faculty members.

Our department's success and ability to take part in world-changing research would not be possible without the support of our alumni. When you support MSE, you are truly investing in the future of our profession. Your financial support will attract students to our disciplines through scholarships and provide for an excellent education through updated laboratories.

As a fellow alumnus, I encourage you to make this investment in our programs. Our Phonathon will launch soon, which means you will likely receive a phone call asking for your support. You can also contribute online. Just click on the "Support our Miners" link below to start this process.

Please know that whether you graduated in 2023 or 1953, you are still a Miner, and you will always be welcome to visit our beautiful campus in Rolla, Missouri. Thank you for being a part of MSE's success story and inspiring our current students.

Sincerely,

Over twice as fast as a speeding bullet

Several countries are competing to develop the most advanced hypersonic vehicles. A team of Missouri S&T researchers recently received $2.6 million in federal funding to assist the United States in these efforts, and they anticipate additional funding will come soon.
