Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:

Collaboration. We desire it. We talk about doing it. What gets in our way? Our specialized education trains us to think differently. Engineers and economists, for example, do not view the world the same way. That’s good for solving problems, but it creates barriers to collaboration required to solve the world’s complex problems.

The Kummer College is designed to break down traditional academic silos. That’s why our founding departments are dissimilar and include engineering management, systems engineering, economics, business, and information technology. These diverse perspectives allow us to prepare leaders who understand how to leverage technology to create value for individuals, organizations and society.

Putting disparate organizations on the same org chart, however, is not enough. Collaboration takes effort and training. This issue’s feature story illustrates one of the tangible steps we are making to have our students develop both a mindset and skillset for collaboration. I hope you enjoy it.

Finally, I want to wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Tim Faley
Interim Vice Provost and Dean

Missouri S&T faculty collaborate to teach value-driven engineering design

Two components critical to innovation that are often taught and practiced separately were recently integrated in an introductory engineering design course that’s required for all first-year engineering and computer science students at Missouri S&T. The third week of the course was taught by economics faculty, who introduced value-driven engineering design and economic integration.

Accolades and Awards

  • Rachel Dzieran, Kummer Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellow and doctoral student in systems engineering, won first place for her poster presentation at the 9th International Engineering Systems Symposium: CESUN 2023, held at Northwestern University in November. The acronym CESUN stands for Council of Engineering Systems Universities. The poster presented a conceptual model that uses a fuzzy associative memory and deep learning network model to help transplant surgeons assessing hard-to-place kidneys. Dzieran’s co-authors are Lirim Ashiku and Richard Threlkeld, doctoral students in systems engineering; Dr. Cihan Dagli, professor of engineering management and systems engineering; and Dr. Robert Marley, Robert B. Koplar professor of engineering management and systems engineering.
  • Dr. Venkat Allada, professor of engineering management and systems engineering, is co-principal investigator on a proposal that was recently awarded $2 million by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The project, “Research and Technological Innovations in Automation, Robotics, and Intelligent Mining Systems for Transformative Improvements in Workplace Safety, Health, and Efficiencies,” began Sept. 1.
  • Dr. Hanqing “Chevy” Fang, associate professor of business and information technology, was appointed an editor of the journal Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice in September. The journal publishes original conceptual and empirical research to advance entrepreneurship. Fang’s research focuses primarily on corporate entrepreneurship and strategic management in the context of family businesses.
  • S&T’s engineering management and systems engineering department and its students were recognized in October at the annual conference of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) in Boulder, Colorado. The department won the 2023 ASEM Founder’s Award for Best Graduate Program, and the undergraduate case study team won first-place in the in-person competition and second-place in the virtual competition. Team members were Sarah Carpenter, Kate Marting, Jane Thompson, Joseph Walton and Tristan Zeh. Dr. Joan Schuman was the team’s faculty advisor.
  • Dr. Mahelet Fikru, associate professor of economics, spoke at the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2023 Toxics Release Inventory National Conference in October in Arlington, Virginia. Fikru addressed the impact a company’s environmental practices have on its financial performance.
  • S&T’s online certificate in financial technology was recently ranked fifth in the nation in the annual rankings of FintechDegrees.org, a financial technology education website. The organization’s methodology is structured around student decision points including affordability, relevant curriculum and reputation.

S&T experiences uptick in research and technology development in FY2024

With 32 invention disclosures received so far, fiscal year 2024 is shaping up to be the busiest year for S&T’s Technology Transfer and Economic Development (TTED) team since 2019. In 2019, there were a total of 54 disclosures. John Woodson, associate director of TTED, says he’s hopeful that the number of disclosures his office receives will continue to increase year over year.
