Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:

I've had the pleasure of working with the Kummer College team for a few weeks now, and it's been an auspicious beginning! We are excited as the team grows to bolster existing programs while launching educational and research programs that align with S&T’s strategic plan and North Star Goals. Aspects of our organization that stand out include the commitment to excellence and professionalism, as well as the friendly, good-natured, enthusiastic and forward-looking nature of people across our college and the university. From faculty, staff, students, department chairs and Kummer Student Programs to my fellow deans and S&T leadership, it's been a joy to be here in Rolla so far.

In this newsletter, we introduce a few new members of our leadership team. In addition to the news about Dr. Amaury Lendasse and Dr. David Enke below, we also welcome Dr. William Zwikelmaier as executive director of development. He will work closely with the team to manage our relationships with alumni, donors and our network of corporate partners and advisors. Will has held a number of key roles at S&T since joining the university in 2015, and we all appreciate the perspective and deep expertise he brings to our college. Welcome to new members of the Kummer College leadership team!

Please be sure to email your news to Patrick Collins, the newsletter editor, at pc5pcn@mst.edu. We publish on the first day of each month unless it falls on a weekend or holiday, as it did this month, in which case we publish on the first Monday.

I look forward to our work together as we build a college for the future.

Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:

It’s my first day at S&T and I can’t find my shillelagh. Do I have to make my own according to specifications? I have a lot to learn!

I’m Jim Sterling and I’m the new dean of Kummer College. I look forward to joining this community, where we’ll strive together to ensure that science and technology are translated into benefits for humanity through innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development.

Even though I’m new, I’m already enjoying being part of the S&T community. On April 28, I had the honor of attending the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s awards ceremony. It was wonderful to witness the energy, enthusiasm and team spirit, and to hear so many of the teams’ success stories. Congratulations to all the award winners.

Speaking of congratulations, last month the Kummer College sent a group of graduates into the future. Whether you’ve entered the workplace, have joined the military or a non-governmental organization such as AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps, or are embarking on your next academic endeavor, please share your stories with us on LinkedIn, accessible via the button at the bottom of this newsletter. We all look forward to keeping in touch.

The generosity of the transformative gift from Fred and June Kummer made this college possible and supports programs and initiatives that transform the lives of our students, including the Kummer Vanguard Scholars program. Please join me in congratulating the first 22 students from that remarkable program to graduate.

As you’ll see here, the Kummer College celebrates its successes. Please don’t miss our Noteworthy section for news about Kummer College faculty, staff and students who are distinguishing themselves and, at the same time, our college and S&T as a whole. Please email your noteworthy news to Patrick Collins, the newsletter editor, at pc5pcn@mst.edu. We publish on the first day of each month unless it falls on a weekend or holiday, as it did this month, in which case we publish on the first Monday.

I look forward to our work together as we build a college for the future.

Sincerely,

Jim Sterling

grand micro challenge

A photo moment

Students who participated in S&T's first Grand Micro Challenge in late April had just a few hours to propose how to store solar and wind power without relying on lithium-ion batteries, or to propose new and improved ways to develop and recycle them. The challenge was organized in part by Kummer Student Programs. Photo by Sam Wright, Missouri S&T.
