Mining and Explosives Engineering

Newsletter

Dear alumni, friends and colleagues:

Thank you for taking the time to read this year’s newsletter. You will learn about the great things our students, alumni, staff and faculty are doing.

In the past year, Missouri S&T made mining and explosives engineering a standalone department and installed permanent leadership. As an S&T alumnus myself, I am honored to chair the department, and I am grateful for the support I have received from all of you. Our department has also seen some amazing accomplishments ranging from our students successfully hosting the 44th Annual Intercollegiate Mining (Mucking) Games to Dr. Taghi Sherizadeh receiving the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Career Development Award.

While we are facing significant challenges related to undergraduate enrollment in mining engineering, we are working hard to increase our enrollment and will gladly partner with you, your employer or other organization you are part of to address this critical challenge to long-term sustainability in our sector. Ensuring a diverse mining workforce is an important part of our efforts. Therefore, I hope you will all join me in congratulating alumnae Fiorella Giana and Kimberly Finke Morrison, who are featured in the National Mining Hall of Fame Exhibit “Pioneering the Field: Women in Mining.”

Kind regards,
