Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:
Many forms of leadership are illustrated in this newsletter.
Leaders set an example. Dr. Rachel Kohman is an academic expert on leadership. She is also a practitioner of the art, as recently receiving the Dr. Elizabeth Cummins Women’s Advocate Award demonstrates. We could not be prouder to have her on the Kummer College leadership team.
Leaders raise the bar. The discipline of engineering management was established here in 1967 as S&T created the first university department explicitly titled “Engineering Management.” Our program continues to lead the way in engineering management education, as illustrated by it recently being ranked third in the nation in online graduate engineering management programs by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. David Enke, the interim chair of engineering management and systems engineering (EMSE) since the summer of 2022, has been the driving force behind the department’s resurgence. Congratulations to Dave and the rest of the faculty and staff of EMSE.
Leaders take action and encourage others to do likewise. Lucas Stone, an EMSE student, showed the ultimate personal leadership on Jan. 16 by performing CPR on a fellow student who collapsed while playing basketball, and was recently recognized for his life-saving actions by University Police Chief Doug Roberts. We are honored to call Lucas one of our own.
On a personal note, this is my final newsletter. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as interim dean of the Kummer College for the past year. Dr. Jim Sterling will become the first permanent dean of the Kummer College on June 1. I believe the college will be in good hands. I look forward to reading about what it accomplishes under his leadership.
