Miners wrap up 2022 home football schedule Saturday against SBU

11/8/2022 2:12:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will close out its 2022 regular season football schedule Saturday as it will take on Southwest Baptist on Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Military members, active or retired, will be admitted free to Saturday's game with their military identification cards and military members will also receive a ticket good for a free hot dog and drink from the concession stand.

The Miners come into their home finale with records of 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the visiting Bearcats enter with marks of 5-5 overall and 3-2 in GLVC play. SBU can claim sole possession of third place in the final standings with a win over S&T Saturday, while the Miners would gain a share of the third place spot with a victory.

Indianapolis and Truman State are currently tied for the GLVC lead at 5-0 in conference and both teams are among the top seven in the latest NCAA Division II regional rankings.  If UIndy and Truman – who square off Saturday in Indianapolis – both make the NCAA playoff field, the third place team finisher is in line for the GLVC's berth in the America's Crossroads Bowl in the first weekend of December.

S&T was idle last week after suffering a 42-16 loss to UIndy, as the Greyhounds scored five of their six touchdowns on drives covering 50 yards or less.  The Miner defense held UIndy to just 295 yards of total offense in the game, but the S&T offense produced just 204 on the night.

Missouri S&T's defense is paced by linebacker Ben Straatmann with 65 tackles, which includes a GLVC-high eight quarterback sacks and 17.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.  Straatmann ranks fourth in NCAA Division II in tackles for a loss and is 14th in the nation in sacks heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Safety Stefan Camplin has recorded 60 tackles on the season and has a team-high seven pass breakups, while Carson Prenger has been in on 50 stops.  The Miners also have seven interceptions on defense this season and have recorded 29 quarterback sacks.

Cameren Smith leads the Miner offense in rushing with 665 yards on the season; his average of 73.9 yards per game is the fifth-best in the GLVC.  Meanwhile, quarterback Staton King has completed 54.1 percent of his passes for 948 yards and eight touchdowns.  S&T's top receiver has been Isaiah Wright with 31 receptions for 406 yards and three touchdowns; he has scored touchdowns in each of the last two S&T contests.

Parker Boyce continues to lead the GLVC in punting with his average of 40.7 yards per punt and has dropped 18 of his 52 kicks inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

The 25 seniors on the Missouri S&T roster will be honored in a ceremony that will begin around 12:45 p.m.

ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: The Bearcats come into Saturday's game with an opportunity to finish a regular season above the .500 mark for the first time since 2016 as they are 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC.  SBU moved into sole possession of third place in the conference after downing Quincy 42-24 Saturday behind a 531-yard offensive day, as quarterback Cooper Callis threw for 378 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Callis, the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against the Hawks, has completed 69.2 percent of his throws for 2,702 yards for 25 touchdowns; he is third in the GLVC in passing yards for the season.  His top target has been Curtis Cuillard with 42 receptions for 593 yards and seven scores, while Jordan Kent has hauled in 30 passes for 464 yards and has scored four times.

After being a team that accumulated a large percentage of its yardage through the air over the last two seasons, the Bearcats have been more balanced this season thanks to the running of Abel Carter.  He currently leads the GLVC in rushing yards with 1,145, which is the ninth-most in NCAA Division II.

Linebacker Coleton Smith leads the Bearcats with 85 tackles, including a team-high nine tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks.  Matt Lockard has recorded 64 tackles on the season and Brenden Smith has made 60 tackles and has a team-leading seven pass breakups.  The Bearcat defense has allowed 31.8 points per game, but has held four of its last five opponents to fewer than 30 points.
