PUEBLO, Colo. – The third time was the charm in more ways than one for Missouri S&T's Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) on Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Luebbert broke the school record in the hammer throw for the third time in the 2023 season and in doing so, captured third place in the event as he recorded a throw of 211-4.  The third place finish matched the second-best ever by a Miner competitor at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was also the highest finish ever posted by an S&T thrower at the national meet.

Luebbert, who earned All-America honors for the second time in his career, opened the afternoon with a throw of 202-1 in the first round, then uncorked his record throw in round two to take the lead in the competition.  By the time Luebbert entered the cage for his third round attempt, he had dropped third as Grand Valley State's Jacob Urban had a throw of 213-3 late in the second round and Missouri Southern's Peyton Barton – throwing immediately ahead of Luebbert – posted a third round mark of 212-0.

All five of Luebbert's countable throws reached or exceeded the 200-foot mark as he posted the best finish by a Miner at the outdoor championships since Dan Hellwig's third place showing in the pole vault in 2010.  His best throw was just over five feet better than the fourth place performance of 206-2 by Tiffin's Jacob McPherson.

Urban improved on his second round mark with a throw of 216-8 in round three to capture the title, while Barton's mark of 212-0 was good for second.

Missouri S&T's Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) will compete Saturday in the shot put, with that event slated to begin at 6:05 p.m., Central time.
